For Adults (16 and older) Canadian Passport Photo Requirements

Dress Code

  • For a passport photo, it's best to wear a plain, light-colored shirt or blouse. Avoid wearing white, as it can blend in with the background. Instead, opt for light blue, light gray, or pastel colors. It's important to wear a top that contrasts with your skin tone and the background to ensure that your face is the focal point of the photo.

Glasses

  • Your eyes must be clearly visible.
  • There must be no glare on the lenses.

Hair down or up

  • Your hair must be off your face, so that the edges of your face are visible.

Hats and head coverings worn daily for religious beliefs

  • Your full face must be clearly visible.
  • The head covering must not create shadows on your face.

a wheelchair, if you place a white blanket behind your head

  • Your facial features and the edges of your face must both be clearly visible.

For newborn babies:

  • The photo may be taken while the child is sitting in a car seat, as long as a white blanket is placed over the seat behind the child’s head. There must be no shadows on the face or shoulders, around the ears or in the background.
